24.01.08 - Jemma's Story
You may have read in a recent copy of the ‘That’s Life’ magazine an article by our very own Jemma Iommi who plays in the 1st team. In case you missed it here’s an edited version of Jemma’s story:
It’s not called the beautiful game for nothing - I’d been playing football since I was seven, I loved the game but sadly I had another passion - junk food. I’d feast on crisps and sweets, the more I exercised, the more my appetite grew. It didn’t bother me that other girls had slim legs and flat midriffs, I had a talent - a promising future in the sport I loved. At 16, I won a place at Newcastle’s prestigious National Women’s Football Academy. Tougher training - hungrier belly. At 18, I was playing for a women’s team in America. Talent scouts had chosen me as part of a four-year scholarship with the University of Mobile in Alabama. It was an honour, a dream, but my weight pushed up to 18 stone. My opponents were faster and fitter and in the hot sun I thundered around the pitch after the football. I couldn’t keep up and a voice from the touchline jeered ‘Get off the pitch, fatty!’…. I cringed….Is that what people really thought of me?....Ashamed and with family troubles back in the UK, I quit America and headed home. I took a job as a warrant officer for the court service but I still played my beloved football and a year on I signed for West Bromwich Albion women’s team. The fitness regime was intense and suddenly the truth hurt, I was letting myself down and more importantly I was letting my team-mates down. I had to act before fat wrecked my future. I cut out snacks and ate more fruit and vegetables, the pangs of emptiness seized me but I fought back with more exercise. It worked, in less than a year I was 9st 12lb, now six months on I’m still the same weight and my team-mates call me Forrest Gump - the man in the film who couldn’t stop running…. ‘Better that than Forrest Lump’.
21.1.08 - A BIG THANK YOU
I would like to say a “BIG THANK YOU” to everyone involved with WBA WFC and lots of others involved in womens football across the Midlands, who have been so kind in sending messages of support, cards, texts, flowers and gifts over the last few weeks, too many of you to mention individually but you all know who you are. I’m now recovery after my surgery and will be starting the next stage of my treatment at the end of January, but, having beaten this once in April 2004 I know it can be done again. I hope to see you soon, thanks again. -x- Helen Fisher
